Health certificate for the UAE: what and why
An export health certificate confirms that a consignment of food or animal products was inspected and is fit for human consumption. It is common for meat, seafood, dairy, eggs, honey and processed food. Health certificates for food and animal products are issued by the competent Indian authority for the product, such as export inspection or animal quarantine authorities.
Food imports into the Middle East are closely checked for health and halal compliance, so legalised certificates are usually requested with each consignment.
In the UAE, a legalised health certificate is typically requested for food import clearance; it is also used for veterinary or food safety approval and retail and distributor registration.
A health certificate issued in India is attested by an Indian Chamber of Commerce, then by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and finally legalised by the Embassy of the UAE in New Delhi.
After the UAE mission in India legalises the document, most UAE authorities also require attestation by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) after arrival, which your UAE partner usually completes. Many import invoices are now attested electronically by MOFA on the importer's side, so confirm with your buyer before attesting invoices in India.
